Jacob Javits autographed Note or Letter
(1904-86) Liberal Republican New York Political Figure. Republican Congressman (1947-54) and State Attorney General (1954-57), defeating Franklin Roosevelt, Jr. in the election. From 1957-81 he served as U.S. Senator where he was considered one of the brightest and most influential Senators, despite the fact he was mostly in the minority. Javits played key roles in passing Civil Rights legislation, labor legislation and was the author of the War Powers Act. He was also increasingly in the minority of his own party due to his liberal politics and the fact that he often voted with the Democrats. In the 1980 election Javits was defeated in the Republican Primary and then ran on the Liberal ticket, loosing the general election.
